Envirolyte Water Disinfecting Systems

"Methodical recommendations to use Anolyte produced in Envirolyte disinfecting units supplied by The Envirolyte Industries International Ltd. to disinfect drinking (municipal) water according to the German Drinking Water Standards (TVO)" (Full report is available upon request)

Some important conclusions of the IHU report

  • . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tests proved that Anolyte produced in Envirolyte units is an effective disinfectant. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
  • . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The determination of organic chlorine compounds and trihalogenmethanes showed significantly less formation of mentioned by-products than defined in the German Drinking Water Standards (TVO) regardless of concentration of free chlorine in Anolyte. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
  • . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Moreover, as the formation of halogens proved to be significantly less than defined in the German Drinking Water Standard (TVO) and the pH-Value only slightly decreased, Anolyte produced in diaphragmatic Envirolyte cells is highly recommended as safe and effective disinfectant.

  • Envirolyte Water Disinfecting Systems are designed to disinfect:

  • - drinking water for municipalities and city residential areas
    - water for brewing and beverage industries
    - dairy factories and food production facilities
    - water in swimming pools and for golf courses
    - drinking water offshore for airports and shipping companies
    - drinking water for restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools etc.

Drawing of a typical Envirolyte water disinfecting system (EWDS)

    How does it work?

    • Every Envirolyte water disinfecting system consists of:

      -Envirolyte unit (one or more)
      - containers for Anolyte and NaCl solution
      - dosing pump(s)
      - flow meter(s)
      - level switch(s)

    • Anolyte produced by Envirolyte unit is collected in a container and then dosed into the incoming water (see typical drawings). The dosing regime depends on the water flow and quality (properties) of the water and is controlled by flow meter connected with dosing pump. Standard dosing regime is given in Table 1

    How is disinfecting achieved?

    • Aqueous solution of NaCl, electrochemically activated in Envirolyte unit, a powerful, non-toxic, non-hazardous disinfectant called Anolyte is the main disinfecting agent in any EWDS.
    • Anolyte is a colourless transparent liquid with a slight chlorine smell. It contains various mixed oxidants predominantly hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite (HClO, ClO2, HClO3, HClO4, H2O2, O2, ClO-, ClO2-, ClO3-, O-, HO2-, OH- - working substances) which give Anolyte highly bactericidal and sporicidal activity.
    • Anolyte parameters are as follows:

    -pH from 2.0 to 8.5
-concentration (general) of active chlorine 300-500 mg/l
-very high oxidant activity with low (hundreds parts of percentage) concentrations of working substances that don't harm chemical and other vital characteristics of the treated water and don't form any toxic compounds.

    • To find out how to monitor the parameters of Anolyte, please send your enquiry to the Envirolyte Industries International Ltd.

The benefits of Envirolyte water disinfecting systems

    We guarantee

    • Due to very low concentration of active chlorine (Table 2), Anolyte diluted in the water as per table 1 does not result in any toxicity effects neither forms any toxic by-products.

    • Anolyte penetrates tiny pores of the water pipes or any other material.
    • Anolyte eliminates biofilm and algae from the distribution system.
    • Water pipes and equipment don't have to be rinsed with water after disinfecting.
    • Anolyte doesn't harm the original, natural properties of the water.
    • Anolyte eliminates chlorine taste and odour, improves taste and odour from algae.
    • Anolyte can be stored and kept for further use when the necessity arises.
    • Easy dosing.
    • High level of safety: no hazardous chemicals produced or used.

    • As a result of disinfecting (in the absence of excessive organic load) TMC is equal to 0
    • Chemical and other vital characteristics of the treated water are not affected

Cost evaluation of disinfecting 1 m3 of drinking water
    with Anolyte.

    Initial data:

    1. Required dose of Anolyte to disinfect drinking water:
    D=0.4 mg/l = 0.4 g/m3

    2. Concentration of active chlorine in Anolyte: C=500 mg/l
    3. Market price of NaCl - 2.0 EEK/Kg (all prices are taken for Estonian Republic)
    4. Amount of NaCl to produce 1 liter of Anolyte - 6-8 g.
    5. Market price of 1 kw/h - 0.85 EEK
    6. Market price of drinking water: 0,015 EEK per Liter

    Cost evaluation.

    • Evaluation is based on Envirolyte EL-900 unit with anolyte production capacity of 90 liters per hour.

    • Energy consumption to produce 90 liters of Anolyte is 0,72 kw/h. Energy consumption for 1 liter of Anolyte:

    • NaCl cost required to produce 1 liter of Anolyte:

    • Energy cost to produce 1 liter of Anolyte:

    • Thus the production cost of 1 liter Anolyte:

    • Considering the dose of 0,4 g/m3 the following volume of Anolyte is needed for disinfecting 1 m3 of water:

    • So the disinfecting cost of 1m3 of drinking water:

Note: The above calculations are made out of practical experience of using Envirolyte systems in Estonian Republic and Russia. The figures might be slightly different for other countries in view of the price differences for salt and electricity as well as differences in the properties of the incoming water.
